Short Biography

Dr. Ducange received the Laurea Degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy, in 2005, where he started a Ph.D. in Information Engineering in 2006.

During his Ph.D, Dr. Ducange held an IEEE Computational Intelligence Society fellowship to attend the First Summer Course in Future Directions in Soft Computing, in Mieres, Spain, in July 2007. From January 2008 to March 2008, Dr. Ducange was a visiting research student at the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, University of Granada, Spain, under the supervision of Prof. Francisco Herrera. From September 2008 to December 2008, Dr. Ducange worked with Prof. Germano Resconi, Catholic University of Milan, at modelling complex systems with a new neural network topology.

Since earning a Ph.D. in 2009, Dr. Ducange has been working as a research fellow at the Department of Information Engineering, of the University of Pisa.

Over the last years, much of Dr. Ducange’s research work has concentrated on Computational Intelligence (CI), in particular on Multi-Objective Evolutionary Fuzzy Systems (MOEFSs). MOEFSs deal with the hybridization of Fuzzy Rule-based Systems (FRBSs) and Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) with the aim of designing accurate and interpretable FRBSs. FRBSs are extensively used to tackle problems such as the classification, regression and control. Their ‘interpretability’, which basically refers to how FRBSs elaborate the input values for producing an output, makes them preferable to other methods.

Dr. Ducange has contributed widely to the field of MOEFSs publishing more than 30 articles on international journals and international conferences. In collaboration with prof. Rafael Alcala (University of Granada, Spain) and Dr. Yusuke Nojima (Osaka Prefecture University, Japan) he organised a workshop on “Genetic Fuzzy Systems - Design and Applications” at ISDA 2009 (Intelligent Systems Design and Applications International Conference, November 30-December 2, 2009, Pisa). In 2011, in collaboration with Prof. Marcelloni, he authored a tutorial on MOEFSs published in Lecture Notes on Artificial Intelligence, edited by Springer.

Dr. Ducange has served as publicity chair for several international conferences and workshops such as: at GEFS 2013, PerSeNS 2012, ISDA 2011, GEFS 2011, ISDA 2009. Additionally, he was member of the Programme Committee of PerSeNS 2012, NaBIC 2012, ISDA 2011, NaBIC 2011, HAIS 2011 and HAIS 2010. Currently, he is member of the Reviewer Board for the following international journals: IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, Information Sciences, International Journal of Approximate Reasoning, International Journal of Uncertainty, Fuzziness and Knowledge-Based Systems, Soft Computing, Evolutionary Intelligence, and Journal of Multiple-Valued Logic. Further, Dr. Ducange has been member of the Editorial Board of Soft Computer, edited by Springer, since June 2013.
