Short Biography
Akira Asano received his B. Eng., M. Eng., and Ph. D. degrees in Applied Physics from Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, in 1987, 1989, and 1992, respectively.

From 1992 to 1998, he was a research associate of the Department of Mechanical System Engineering, Kyushu Insititute of Technology, Japan. From 1998 to 2005, he was an associate professor of the Division of Mathematical and Information Sciences, Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences, Hiroshima University. He became a professor there in 2005, and he has been a professor of the Department of Information Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Hiroshima University since 2006.

On September and October in 1990, he was a guest scientist of the Information Transmission Problems, the USSR Academy of Sciences. From May 1994 to February 1995, he was a guest scientist of VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) Information Technology. Since 2006, he has been working as a research expert in the Project for Research and Education Development on Information and Communication Technology in ITS (PREDICT-ITS), Surabaya, Indonesia, executed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

His current research interests are in the area of image processing, especially mathematical morphology, medical image processing, and visual kansei science. He is a member of the IEEE, the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers, Japan (IEICE), Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers, Japan Society of Kansei Engineering, and Japan Society of Applied Statistics. He received the award for excellent poster presentations in the 24th Joint Conference on Imaging Technology, Tokyo, Japan, in 1993, and the Excellent Paper Award in the International Conference on Kansei Engineering and Emotion Research 2007 (KEER2007), Sapporo, Japan, in 2007.
