Short Biography
Florin Pop has early scientific and scholarly contributions in 6 year of activity (since 2005) are in the field of large scale distributed systems concerning scheduling and resource management (decentralized techniques, re-scheduling), multi-criteria optimization methods, Grid middleware tools and applications development (satellite image processing an environmental data analysis), prediction methods, self-organizing systems, contextualized services in distributes systems. These contributions led to important results, demonstrating the Florin Pop's qualifications and potential to go significantly beyond the state of the art. For all scientific activity Florin Pop was awarded with “Magna cum laude” distinction from University Politehnica of Bucharest (at the end of his PhD studies), two Prizes for Excellence from IBM and Oracle, one Award by CENIC for Innovations in Networking (in 2006, as a member of MonALISA team) and one Best Paper Award. All the results obtained in research were published in 2 books (international and national), 7 chapters in edited international books (Springer, IGI Global, 3 chapters as main author and 2 chapters as single author), 14 articles in major international peer-reviewed journal (3 as main author, 1 as single author, 6 published without the participation of the PhD supervisor), 86 papers in well-established international conferences and workshops (over 70 papers indexed by IEEE and ACM, 3 papers a single author 24 papers published as main author, 14 papers published without the participation of the PhD supervisor). These publications received over 52 independent citations only in 4 years (after 2 years of the early research career). During his career, Florin Pop published also 5 books represented didactic courses and practical lessons for students. Based on his initial research results, in 2006, Florin Pop won in a public competition his first research grant as a director, for 2 years. The grant title was Intelligent Strategies for Scheduling Optimization in Grid Environments. This research project finished with success in 2008, and sustained by the new and high-qualitative research results, in 2010, Florin Pop won again, as a grant director, another research project (in open competition). The project title is SORMSYS – Resource Management Optimization in Self-Organizing Large Scale Distributed Systems. This project is based on the first project’s experience and enhances Florin Pop leadership potential. The project will finish in the summer of 2012. Florin Pop is an active and important member of Distributed Systems Laboratory (DSLab) in Computer Science Department. He established and maintains important collaborations with several institutes from EU and around the world. One of the important collaboration is the associated team DataCloud@Work between KerData and Myriads teams from INRIA Rennes and the Computer Science Department from Politehnica University of Bucharest. In this collaboration, Florin Pop proposed a research task for 2012 focused on distributed data aggregation using BlobSeer, the large-scale distributed storage service design in KerData Team. Other collaborations include Technical University of Catalonia (Spain), University of Derby (UK), University of Bielsko-Biala (Poland), Fukuoka Institute of Technology (Japan). These collaborations resulted in joint international research projects and events (conferences and workshops), scientifically coordinated by Florin Pop together with the PhD supervisor which is the head of Computer Science Department and the coordinator of DSLab. These collaborations generate high-quality scientific recognition for the DSLab. His two projects were also hosted in DSLab. In all these projects, during the last period of PhD studies, but mainly after Florin Pop finished his PhD, he assumed a scientific leadership, supervising within DSLab over 48 Bachelor-level and 24 Master-level students. They all finished with well-received Bachelor and Master Degree thesis and highest marks. He also has a successful collaboration with all active and past members of DSLab. All results obtained together with his students and in collaboration with his colleagues were jointly published in 49 papers in prestigious conferences. Many of these students were later admitted to Master and PhD programs in top ranked universities (Stony Brook University – USA, University of Houston – USA, University of Oxford – UK, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne – Switzerland, VU University Amsterdam – The Netherlands, Delft University of Technology – The Netherlands) or in prestigious international companies (Google, IBM, Microsoft, SAP). Another aspect that motivates the scientific leadership potential of Florin Pop is represented by several participations (based on invitation) in scientific program committee in international conference (over 10 conferences), as review in high-ranked journals (over 6 journals), as track chair (as main track in 3 international conferences) and as workshops organizer (4 international workshops). All of these represent a significant recognition of Florin Pop at international level as a young, competitive and motivated researcher.
