Short Biography
Dr. Ashraf Saad joined Armstrong Atlantic State University in August 2006 as Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science. Prior to that he was Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Savannah campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology (2001-2006) where he was the founder and director of the Developmental Robotics Laboratory. He was Assistant/Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati (1996-2000) where he spearheaded the creation of a Bachelor of Science degree for information technology education. Dr. Saad taught courses at all levels of the curriculum, in computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and information technology. He has also served as advisor for over fifty and continues to mentor advisees in undergraduate and graduate research at AASU.

Dr. Saad's research interests include soft, bio-inspired and nature-inspired computing as applied to robotics and to the development of intelligent systems for emerging computing areas, such as bioinformatics. He has contributed to the organization of international conferences in these areas. He is currently serving as Program Co-Chair for the 2008 World Online World Conference on Soft Computing in Industrial applications and served on the Program Committee of the 2008 International Conference on Hybrid Intelligent Systems. He has been invited to serve as an International Co-Chair for the 2009 World Congress on Nature and Biologically Inspired Computing. He also publishes and serves on a regular basis as reviewer of conference papers and journal articles in these and related research areas. Many of his papers are co-authored by undergraduate and graduate student advisees. Dr. Saad received the Institute-level Undergraduate Research Mentor Award at Georgia Tech for regularly mentoring students on undergraduate research projects at the then nascent GT-Savannah campus. He also mentored, served on the proposal and dissertation defense committees of, and co-authored conference papers and journal articles with, over 10 graduate students.

Dr. Saad has sustained substantial involvement with the National Science Foundation to-date. He has served since 1996 as panelist and as Chair of peer-review panels for several NSF programs, and as member and Chair of National Visiting Committees to evaluate, advise and assist projects and centers of excellence for information technology education. He also served and currently serves as Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator of several NSF-funded projects totalling about $3.5 million in funding, including: an Advanced Technological Education project (1999-2003), a CCLI project (2000-2004), an Information Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) project (2008-2010) and a CISE Pathways to Revitalized Undergraduate Computing Education (CPATH) project (2007-2010). Dr. Saad obtained his PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1996 from Vanderbilt University, where he was member of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory. He obtained his Master of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence from Cranfield Institute of Technology, England, in 1991, and his bachelor of science degree in computer and automatic control engineering from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt, in 1988. He has acquired industrial experience by virtue of working at software research and development laboratories at companies and research institutes in France, Japan and Spain. He is a senior member of the IEEE (SM 4, M 6, S 5) and member of the ACM professional societies.
