Short Biography
Dr. Qing Tan joined the School of Computing Information and Systems, Athabasca University as an Academic Coordinator with his 15 years research and industry experience in 2007 and became an Assistant Professor in 2009. With his PhD in Cybernetics Engineering for Robotics from the Norwegian Institute of Technology, earned in 1993, his doctorial research was on Model Based Anthropomorphic Robot Tele-operation. After his finishing his degree, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute invited him in 1994 as a foreign senior research fellow. His research in Japan was on Telepresence with Virtual Reality for Human Acts Simulation Program. From 1996, Dr. Tan took several senior technical management positions during his industry career in Canada. He led and involved in various software application developments and cutting edge technology system R&Ds.

Dr. Tan's research interests lie mainly with Location Based Technologies, Mobile Computing and Technologies, Wireless Sensors Networks, Network Technologies and Cyber Security, Cloud Computing, Enterprise Modeling, and Robotics and Robot Telepresence. He has also been a program committee member, reviewer, guest editor, and has been invited as a speaker to several international conferences, journals, and universities since he returning to his academic career.

Since 2007, Dr. Tan has written and published 14 conference papers, 3 journal papers, and 2 book chapters. He is leading and actively promoting the research in applying location technologies into adaptive mobile learning. He has also proposed the 5R adaptive mobile learning, i.e. right time, right location, and right contents through right device for right person. He is the principle investigator and co-investigator of various national, institutional, and industry research projects with the grants in total over one million Canadian dollars. Developer of a Location-based Adaptive Mobile Learning Application System powered by the Location-based Dynamic Grouping Algorithm. Dr. Tan is also leading and supervising various location-based mobile application system developments .
