Short Biography

Professor Lai received his PhD at Michigan State University, USA. He is currently an Honorary Professor at the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Hong Kong University, Hong Kong. Prior to his post, he was the Chair Professor of Management Science at the City University of Hong Kong. Before his academic appointment, he was a Senior Operational Research Analyst for Cathay Pacific Airways and an Area Manager on Marketing Information Systems for Union Carbide Eastern. Professor Lai’s main areas of research interests are operations and supply chain management, financial and business risk analysis and modeling using computational intelligence. He has extensively published in international refereed journals on the above areas. He is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Logistics and SCM Systems and International Journal of Operations Research. He is the Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Operational Research Society of Hong Kong and currently the President of the Asia Association on Risk and Crises Management.

In 2009, Professor Lai was the recipient of the Joon S. Moon Distinguished International Alumni Award of the Michigan State University and also appointed as the Chang Jiang Scholar Chair Professor by the Ministry of Education, China. In 2013, he has been selected as Fellow of the Asia Pacific Association of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems. In 2014, he was the recipient of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award, Michigan State University, USA. In 2017, Professor Lai is elected as the Academician of the International Academy of Systems and Cybernetic Sciences.
