K. Somasundaram was born in the year 1953. He received his MSc degree in Physics(electronics) from the University of Madras, Chennai, India, in 1976,PhD degree in Theoretical Physics from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, in 1984 and the Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Methods from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, India, in 1989 . He is presently the Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Applications, Gandhigram Rural Institute, Gandhigram, India. From 1976 to 1989, he was a Professor with the Department of Physics at the same institute. He was previously a Researcher at the  International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, and a Development Fellow of Commonwealth Universities at the School of Multimedia, Edith Cowan University, Australia. His research interests are in image processing, image compression , medical image processing , magnetohydrodynamic waves and  astrophysical Plasma. He has published over 160 research articles, which includes about 40 papers in SCI journals having impact factor 0.4 to 7. He has completed 3 Major research projects funded by University Grants Commission, India(1) and Department of Science and Technology, India(2). He has guided 18 candidates for the award of Ph.D.,  2 Ph.D. candidates in Astrophysical plasmas , 15 candidates in Medical Image processing, and one in Computer Simulation of Sweet Potato growth. Currently he is guiding two candidate for Ph.D. in image processing. He has published three books on Java programming and edited two books in Image Processing. He has visited several countries for academic activities: USA, Italy, Australia, Hungary, Singapore and Thailand. He is a Life member of Indian Society for Technical Education. He is life member in Telemedicine Society of India. He is also an annual member in ACM, USA and IEEE Computer Society, USA.
