Short Biography
Pavol Navrat has been researching various themes within Artificial Intelligence, including automatic program synthesis, knowledge based systems, knowledge based software engineering, multiagent systems, scheduling and planning, semantic web, knowledge management, biologically inspired computing and web intelligence. He publisheddozens of refereed journal/conference papers and book chapters. He supervised several Ph.D. students. He received his PhD degree from Slovak University of Technology in 1984,his research topic was automatic program synthesis. He became full professor in 1996. His engagement was instrumental in establishing the first Faculty of Informatics and Information Technologies in Slovakia in 2003. He is director of the Institute of Informatics and Software Engineering since then. He co-chaired the Joint Conference on Knowledge Based Software Engineering Conference in 1998 and co-edited its Proceedings published by IOS Press.

He co-chaired the Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems in 2002 and co-edited its Proceedings published by Springer Verlag. He co-chaired the SOFSEM Conference in 2008 and co-edited its Proceedings published by Springer Verlag. He co-chairs the Conference Znalosti/Knowledge 2009.

He serves as associate editor of the journal Computing and Informatics and a member of editorial board of the Informatica journal. He is the first coauthor of a textbook on Artificial Intelligence published and used by students of various universities in Slovakia. He has been the leading person of several research projects in the field related to Artificial Intelligence. Most recently, he lead a research project involving two universities, one research institute and one private company investigating methods and tools of information acquisition, organisation, and presentation in an environment of heterogeneous information sources called NAZOU.

He serves as Slovakia's representative on IFIP TC 12 Artificial Intelligence. Since 2008, by invitation, he became Slovakia's representative of the Web Intelligence Consortium Slovak Research Centre, which is an affiliated centre of WIC international organization.
